flitch beams for loft conversion

What Is a Flitch Beam?

A flitch beam is a composite structural beam made by sandwiching a steel plate (flitch plate), between two timber joists, then bolting the assembly together at regular intervals.

The steel core increases the load-bearing capacity and stiffness of the beam without increasing its overall depth, making it ideal for situations where beam height is restricted.

Flitch beams are widely used in extensions, loft conversions, floor beams and internal wall removals where a slim profile is needed.

Standard Flitch Plate Sizes

All plates can be cut to order. The table below shows common dimensions; non-standard sizes are available on request.

FAQs

What is the difference between a flitch beam and a flitch plate?

A flitch plate is the steel element on its own. A flitch beam is the completed assembly, the steel plate sandwiched between timber joists and bolted together. Southend Steels supplies the steel flitch plate, cut to your size & our company E-Timber will provide you the C24 treated timber.

The steel plate significantly increases the strength and stiffness of the timber beam without adding much depth. It allows builders to span longer distances and carry heavier loads while retaining the look of timber.
Typically, a flitch plate is placed between two timber beams and then bolted together at regular intervals using through bolts. The assembly must be engineered to ensure structural integrity.
For interior use, mild steel plates are typically fine with a basic primer. For exterior or damp environments, galvanised or stainless steel plates are recommended to prevent corrosion.
They can be a more cost-effective solution than deep solid timber or full steel beams, especially when working with limited ceiling height or needing to preserve a timber look.
We typically turn around cut-to-size orders within a few days. Delivery across Essex, London and Kent is available, with free delivery on orders over £500 or within the Southend to Rayleigh area.
